We expect a lot from scarecrows. We put them up on poles and they’re supposed to work 24/7 for the rest of the season. They stand straight in the blazing hot sun. They sag under intense lightning storms. But no matter what, they’re far afield, doing what they do best, scaring off crows. And do we thank them? Not really. We paint pictures of them with crows perched on their shoulders. Ironic, sure but it also insinuates that they’re not doing a very good job.
